January 19th, 2012
Our nation will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s ascension to the throne – on February 6th, 2012. In fact, the period February 6-12 has been designated as Diamond Jubilee Week. Celebrations will continue throughout the year, with tributes being paid to Her Majesty on Commonwealth Day this March 12th, Victoria Day this May 21st and Canada Day this July 1st.
Funding has been provided to community activities across the country celebrating this special event to ensure a proper celebration from coast to coast.
“Our Government received a strong mandate to support and celebrate important milestones for Canada, like the Diamond Jubilee,” said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, “The only other time Canada celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of a reigning sovereign was for Queen Victoria in 1897. By supporting this most historic and significant anniversary, our Government is delivering on its commitment to reinforce our heritage through active celebration of our institutions that define who we are as Canadians.
“For 60 years, Her Majesty has exemplified the true meaning of public service,” said Minister Moore. “Today, I invite Canadians to start planning for the Diamond Jubilee. This is an opportunity to celebrate the past 60 years under Her Majesty’s reign, her dedicated service to our country, and the important role of the Canadian Crown.”
This event provides a great opportunity to learn more about Her Royal Highness. Those wishing to learn more about the Diamond Jubilee should visit http://www.diamondjubilee.pch.gc.ca where there are photos, videos, educational materials, a compendium of information and even a section for Canadians to send greetings to Queen Elizabeth II on this special occasion.
Sixty thousand Diamond Jubilee medals will be awarded to Canadians this year, to celebrate significant contributions made by Canadians to their communities. If you know someone you believe deserves to be honoured with one of these medals, please contact me using the information below.
